Toyota Safety Sense was created because Toyota placed safety at the heart of its mission long before developing one of the world’s most respected driver-assist technologies. The company operates a dedicated division focused on advancing safety innovations. In 2011, Toyota launched its Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) to further its commitment to mobility safety. Since then, the CSRC has worked hand in hand with universities, hospitals, and industry leaders to find new ways to reduce crash injuries, understand driver behavior, and prevent accidents. The results have been outstanding.
Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project
Toyota’s CSRC is deeply committed to researching collision mitigation. Since crashes can claim lives, every breakthrough that helps protect drivers and passengers marks progress in vehicle safety. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that its collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab resulted in the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.
Reflecting on this achievement, CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov shared, “This is a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” The project with MIT focused on how drivers and pedestrians interact with technologies like mobile devices and in-vehicle touchscreens.
This 100th project, supported by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, showcased the close partnership between Toyota and MIT. The research produced valuable insights, including a dataset on voice-based human-machine interaction and driver-pedestrian behavior. The team also examined the impact of driver-assist systems on behavior and how drivers manage tasks unrelated to driving.
Looking to the future, Toyota’s research center has already outlined its next 10 projects. The CSRC will be partnering with the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is celebrating this milestone while focusing on how to apply these findings to make driving even safer for everyone.
