Toyota is the world's largest automobile manufacturer, with a rich history spanning several decades. Let's explore Toyota's journey to becoming the leading name in the automotive industry.

Early History

Toyota Motor Corporation originated as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in Japan. It became an independent company in 1937, led by Kiichiro Toyoda. During World War II, Toyota produced vehicles for the Japanese military but faced potential closure after the war ended.

Toyota Motor Sales Co.

In 1950, Toyota established Toyota Motor Sales Co. in Japan. By 1957, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. was founded in Hollywood, California. Sales in the U.S. commenced in 1958 with 287 Toyopet Crown sedans and one Land Cruiser. While many buyers found the Toyopet vehicles underpowered and overpriced, leading to their discontinuation in 1961, the Land Cruiser earned a reputation for durability and became the only Toyota model available in the U.S. at the time.

Rise in Popularity

The Toyota Corona, released in 1965, was designed specifically for American drivers and tripled the company's sales by 1966. The 1968 launch of the Corolla, which became the world's best-selling passenger car, further cemented Toyota's success.

In 1975, Toyota surpassed Volkswagen as the top import brand in the United States. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Toyota maintained its position as a leading automotive manufacturer, introducing the Lexus brand in 1987 and selling luxury vehicles under that name from 1989.

In 1998, Toyota expanded its lineup with the Tundra, its first full-sized pickup truck, and the Prius, the first mass-produced gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle.

The Scion brand, launched in 2003, targeted younger drivers and contributed to Toyota's continued growth. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Toyota produced popular models like the Tacoma and the Highlander.
